February Denial

It’s insane what a good song “The Denial Twist” by the White Stripes is, I like songs that have a sense of lyrical bizarreness and plain old Wudan style funkiness.

February was a cold month and I woke in a fit more often than not. It sets in that soon I’ll have been married for 7 years and soon I’ll have a 7 year old and soon I’ll have just a few short years left in my twenties.

I blogged but twice for the entire duration of February and this is number 3, with February now over in the Eastern Time Zone, I am glad that March is on it’s way, my school work for this semester is pretty much over except for a Final in my English class.

Screw ’em.

So to you, the truth is still hidden
And the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten but
You should know that the dark is one kitten?
She’s been singing it all along

But you were hearin’ a different song
Ya you were hearin’ a different song
But you were hearin’ a different song

The Purge

I’ve grown tired of spam-bot generated spam. For whatever reason, it was most strong on an old post, with tons of comments generated. I just enabled Bad Behavior and WordPress Advanced Cache to keep pesky spambots off my pages and speed up the site browsing, a two for one deal, if you will.

I haven’t been feeling like blogging much, school has sapped my will to do anything at all.

I’m glad my mom’s back in town though 🙂

Park your car in the Harvard Yard! Arrrrr!

My pirate name is:
Bloody Sam Flint

Every pirate lives for something different. For some, it’s the open sea. For others (the masochists), it’s the food. For you, it’s definitely the fighting. Like the rock flint, you’re hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you’re easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!

Get your own pirate name from fidius.org.

There is a line

… and sometimes you just don’t cross it. Last year I wrote a tool that takes a TrueType font and converts it to an image and data file so that the in-game fonts of Jedi Academy can be replaced. About a month ago, a guy couldn’t get it to work, so I had him send it to me and I converted it and explained why it didn’t work. Last night another hapless end-user just sent me a font and asked me to convert it …

Is it me, or didn’t I write the tool so that people could do the conversion themselves? If there’s an error or bug, fine, let me know, and if I am so stalwart as to ask you to send me a copy so that I can attempt to reproduce the bug myself, go ahead and send it on up, but outside of that, a free tool is a free tool – and I’m not the tool.

I feel bad since I’ve always tried to give my end-user’s my best, but right now I’m strapped for time, and I need to concentrate on the most important things.

Aside from that, I’ve been sick, tired, and cranky.

My cholesterol is high, my sugar levels are high (probably because I’m a fat bastard), my … fat is high … I need to lose weight, in a bad way.

putting the ‘Cat’ in Educate

Man I’ve been in a pissy mood lately. Probably because there’s a new episode of LOST tonight and I won’t get to see it. We do seem to be made to suffer.

By the way, I’ll be at school every night of the week for the next 8 weeks.

My Katamari music obsession (just ask Sukie about my Katamari dance) led me to search for downloads of Japanese music, but really, I don’t expect much from Japanese music, though I like music for video games and anime 🙂 Oh wait, that is the entirety of Japanese music, isn’t it?

I was able to track down my coding sensei and master, Trimbo, who’s requested that I give him a shout-out 🙂 Without him, I’d probably be a depressed, helpless, listless moron. He was never rude or unkind in all the time I was learning from him, which is a feat. Thanks to him and this here Internet, I’ve learned so much over the last 3+ years.

I lurked in the #movie_battles IRC channel today and really enjoyed mixing it up with those guys. Some of the guys recognized me (as I’m a mini-celebrity down in the little pond of Jedi Academy coding,) which I’m always amazed at how many people are familiar with my work. Back in the day (way back) I was using IRC a lot more, but everyone I know from IRC is all gone away, just a few holdouts remain.

A great guy named Tr3b is also working on a Quake3 engine, and he implemented something cool in Quake3 today: deluxe-mapping. He did it some time ago and is familiar with it, but today he and some mappers were working on it. Well, it’s just awesome. Oh, and I need a better video card.

Above the mess

Well, maybe our house fell out of order because of Katamari Damacy, but Sukie and I are determined to reign in the beast this weekend and put our house back in order.

Last night I got to use the drill I got for Christmas – I drilled guide holes for some screws to hang up our clock, the drilled the screws in – it was awesome, because usually it’s annoying to drive in screws to the wall by hand. Well, that was fun.

Mostly, I just haven’t been in a blogging mood lately. Everything’s been so out of order. I did manage to beat Sukie’s moon katamari of 862 meters 53 centimeters, with my own of over 864 meters. Not sure how many centimeters though.

Goblin’s of Christmas Past

Notwithstanding several unfortunate spills and a few tense moments, this year’s Christmas was an unparalleled success. My mom got a new oven/stove, Sukie and I got the Omega-Vacuum (aka, a Dyson), Jabba got a chess set and some keen books, and I think everyone’s a little closer and happier for it.

I’m glad that everyone was able to congregate and play some wonderful Apples to Apples – as I have previously testified, it is a game that is not likely to start any wars, family feuds, or mild discomfort. I’ll bet President Jimmy Carter invented it, he’s such a sharp chap.

Christmas Eve rolled on in to Christmas morning, so Sukie and I loaded up Jabba, explained that Santa wouldn’t come until he was asleep, and put him to bed, all of which occured in that order.

With last year’s computer, and this year’s oven, I think it’d be keen if we tried to top ourselves for next year, and spoil my wonderful mom rotten 🙂

So on Christmas, Yoshi Dax and myself played a few games of Magic, which I promptly lost, each time. I have a lot of so-so cards, but as fate would have it we each had Goblin decks, and a war nearly ensued. Some other time, eh?

Oh, and I got RISK (classic) from Jabba – I MUST PLAY SOME RISK, DAMNIT!

Perchance Happenstance

This Holiday Season I have many reasons to consider myself lucky.

Well, at least, this week. Earlier this week I was nearly involved in an absolutely terrifying car accident. While merging from one freeway to another, the car in front of me (which was a rear-wheel drive old school sports car) was going too fast, and the car behind me was going too fast.

Trouble ensued. Let’s start at the beginning.

I’m driving along, well aware that I need to get in the next lane over to make the next exit. The jerk behind me (sports car) zipped on past and switched to the lane I was eyeing, with another jerk (the rear car) zipping on through.

Ok, the roads were WET that morning, but I know that you can SLIDE on WET asphault. So I get over, behind the sports car and in front of the rear car. The rear car proceeds to get all up ons, and I’m like, whatever, I needed to be over here. I take the ramp at 10 under the speed limit, because I know the end of this ramp is an abrupt turn, and not to be taken lightly (the last car accident I saw was at the same place, the guy and his passenger were OK though.)

So there I am, taking the ramp slower, the guy behind me is intentionally closing the gap between us.

It was then that I knew that shit was going to go down. I don’t know how I knew, but I knew, and time literally slowed down.

The sports car hits the end of the onramp, where he’s supposed to merge in to traffic and just slides right in to the other lane, hitting the other car at 30+ mph. I saw it all happen and started to slow down. No sooner did I touch my brakes than I look in my rear view and see the stupid ass jerk behind me SLAM his brakes, causing his car to slide.

Ok, I need to be careful about that, my brain says, and I look forward again, the sports car has ricochetted off the car in the other lane and both of them are leaving the freeway. I tap my brakes long enough to let the sports car and his target clear the freeway and the jerk behind me is still a slidin’ away towards my bumper, so as soon as I can tell the right side of my car is in the clear, I take my foot off the brakes and coast on past the wreckage.

What happens next is embarrassing. EVERYONE has left the freeway, pretty much. Cars that were hit, cars that weren’t hit are leaving to avoid being hit. There was a highway patrolman right there, not more than 30 feet from the accident, so my mind says, oh, he’s got it and I drive off, I was so absolutely pumped with adrenaline that it didn’t occur to me til much later (maybe 20 minutes) that I should have stopped, and then when the adrenaline left, I sort felt sick.

I feel bad about what happened, I don’t feel as though it was my fault in the least, because the situation could have been a lot worse for everyone involved, had I not taken the onramp as slow as I did.

Anyway, we didn’t get the house we wanted, but we did start the process to get a killer loan for an as-yet unspecified house.

I will mourn for the house that almost was.

I forgot to mention

I’ll be getting a house. There’s an extremely slim chance that things might not work out, and even then, I’ll get a house eventually.

People ask me why I don’t blog more often. Really.
