Jericho Fodder

Often times, when the good folks in Television portray computer use they don’t use actual footage of the OSs’ interface, for some reason or another.
While watching last nights Jericho, the mysterious character Robert Hawkins is using a laptop to converse with his co-conspirators and the background of his laptop displayed what looked like a disclaimer, with phrases like “interest of Mackay or any third party” on it.

Well, it turns out that’s an actual page, which I find slightly amusing. Shows like LOST have ruined my eyes, I see too much now! It looks to me like it’s an actual company, not a fake-easter-egg-fan-service site, like those clever writers at LOST would toss at me.

Grueling Pace

Tonight I was given the chance to work on one of my many projects, or, for added fun, take a trip to Draper with my honey Sukie and get some saltwater aquarium rocks to seed our large 75 gallon saltwater tank. Oh me oh my, I chose door number 2 and we trekked on out to what should only be described as the Salt Lake Valley’s nether-regions.

As the old story goes, hilarity ensued. Not only did I keep working myself up to being angry at not having PRECISE coordinates (though we had a map that was pretty much useless unless the directions to the location were followed (which they weren’t)) I tried to keep cool under the mounting annoyance that so many of my evenings are spent on fruitless endeavors and so many of my days are spent engaged in working for ‘the man’.

After all the chips were down, we gave up, and I had a delcious peanut-butter and chocolate chip shake out of the deal (too many shakes give Wudan the shakes!) Tip to all you hip young kids: ask Jabba (the boy) to say, “You’re Welcome.” It’s an excercise in hilarity. 100 points to your house if you get what Jabba is refering to.

I’ve decided to try to blog more often, since so much of life is worth noting. I usually run in to someone, and tell them about the things I would blog about, and then never blog about them. How much of life is wasted away, talking to you people, when I could fill my blog with volumes of witty insight and clever observation?

I was thinking today about the fragile anatomy of contra-culture, especially since in my estimation, EMO culture was most likely originated as a contra-culture. Once it gains notoriety, it is subject to duplication and therefore, is no longer a contra-culture. The truly beautiful things in life are not apt to be things that are brought before you, such as the TV is a passive educator and its experiences cheapened by the fact that you had to do nothing to experience them, except sit and watch.

On that note, The Office returns September 21st (and probably My Name is Earl, as well) as does Gray’s Anatomy. I’ve watched both seasons of Gray’s, but I don’t think I’ve learned anything. Oh, except maybe that surgeons might have lives more complex than the minions of a certain Orange County.

One Man’s Trash

So I spent Friday assessing what computer parts I have as well as what I can put together. Summed up, I got a nice haul from a dumpster down the street from where I work. I drove by today but apparently the well of goodness has dried up. That’s fine with me, I got my share of the haul. I’m not crazy either, as I’ve driven by the same dumpster only an hour after I’ve picked over it and found guys dressed much nicer than me picking through it.

I put together an hard-drive, DVD drive, mobo, proc, vid card, LAN card, and audio mixer card I already have to build my first Linux box. It took much longer than I thought it would because (a) I couldn’t find my Breezy Badger install disc; and (b) I first tried using a former X-Box hard-drive.

Whoops, you have to do some flashy firmware flashiness stuff to those hard-drives. No matter, they are only 10 Gig, no wonder they weren’t being used. I imagine putting them all in a striped raid array, just for kicks. I thought I might use them before, but then I cracked open a rather heavy cube shaped server and found 4 identical 80 Gig HDs. Nice. Nice. So very, very nice.
So basically, once i had downloaded and installed Ubuntu 6.06 (aka Dapper Drake), it has been fun to learn to use it (just imagine that your entire OS looks like gAIM.) Jabba wanted to use my computer so I let him, he sat down, looked at the screen, turned and said to me, “What did you do to your computer?”

“That’s Linux.” His jaw dropped and slowly turned to face the perplexing screen again. (Firefox was up, so it was kind of familiar.)

Fridge Day

Saturday, July the 22nd shall be known as Fridge day. The day was not spent packing, as was previously assumed to be the case, but it was spent instead on the dubious task of delivering a fridge unto ourselves.

As is my tradition, I had a hard time keeping my cool in the face of laboring in a fashion unbecoming a true geek, and although I looked forward to messin wit mah Fridge (whose mighty frostiness is the root of civilzation), I had engaged myself in the occupation of fridge delivery/exorcism.

We shall honour Fridge deliverers, for theirs is an apparently difficult task. When the sun was down, my Fridge was not in the Fridge nook (which, despite all measurements saying so, we were not certain would fit in to said nook), but it was in the Garage, which is where a Fridge deliverer would have planted said device.

However, forces unseen worked their magicks, and I found myself, at night, in my Garage, working on the first of many epic Garage ventures – fixin to put said Fridge (which I shall now dub “Juan Frosty”) in to the desination: nook. The doors were finally removed and I strapped up Juan Frosty on the dolly and rolled him up to the doors, had a !@#^%^@%$ time getting him up the steps, screamed like a woman in the pains of labour, and eventually the deed rounded the corner, fully in view of the finish line.

We scooted it in to place, I couldn’t figure out how to hook up Juan’s Ice Maker, so we just plugged it in and backed it in to place (after putting the doors back on.)

Juan’s Frosty demeanor was restored to service, and there was rejoicing.

Of course, my head smelled kind of like Chicken noodle soup, which apparently is what happens when you spend the entire day sweating like a frosty soda pop.

And now for the exciting gratitude portion of this our daily blog:

I’d like to thank my parents for their help (my dad for his suggestions and insight, and my mom for running the Van to Dax, and for the food and beverage runs (yes, plural)), my brother TheOrb77, who stuck with me and didn’t back down from the challenge, and for advising me in personal matters, my brother Dax, who did his best to help out, and for Sukie, who, in spite of her small stature, is 100% pure badass.

It turned into a Blogroom Blitz!

I’ve finally upgraded to WordPress 2.0.3. It’s eye candy-licious. Have a happy 4th, yall!

Best. Video. Ever.

Ok, Sukie was right. Jabba/Wolverine’s obsession with Star Wars put it in the back of my mind, but when I see something like this, I get all kinds of giddy all over again.

Why I don’t blog

It’s been a long time, blogging has been hard to do since I pretty much have next to no interest in putting my thoughts on here.

In the past month, we’ve had a number of times to gather the family and hang out, which has been fun, and again I must state that I’m really looking forward to the family reunion in a week and a half. I have threatened to take video footage of theorb when he is most juiciest, because I think he’s more loveable when he’s far from his major causes of stress and unhappiness. Last year he went in a pretty pissy mood but thawed out enough to enjoy his own juiciness.

I really liked seeing him feel better, because when people around you are having fun, you get this residual good feeling of overall goodness (RGFOOG). Frankly, I look forward to seeing as many siblings towed around on an inner tube as possible. Theorb, however, is more aerodynamically shaped and therefore can go higher than the rest of us.

I’ve got tons of time off, too, for the week leading up to that fateful weekend, which is good, because it’ll give me more time to work on my own projects.

Well, that’s a blog entry. I’m out.

Insomniac

Sometimes things feel especially crummy, and a particular song plays on the radio and it just makes you feel better.

I’ve been dealing with a particularly heinous brand of pickled responsibility at my work and it has made my blood curdle. Oh, and I think it’s been causing my insomnia that has so disturbed my sleep.

Well, X96 DJ/Programming Director Todd Nukem played “Beautiful World” by Devo today, and damnit if that isn’t a good song. It just put me in a better mood.

So in recent history, Antigone’s brother Michael graduated High School, Jabba (or is it Wolverine?) had a bad ass birthday party, thanks to Sukie’s awesome planning, and I had a really good time hanging with my family last weekend. (MEN!)

So, life is feeling 110% better. And I’m looking forward to camping with my family, and my family reunion 🙂
